Considering making Tofino your home?

If you're thinking of moving to town, chances are you've been here and are familiar with the beaches, restaurants and trails. I'd like to provide you with more detailed information about what to expect when you live here.

CENSUS PROFILE
Tofno's population in 2011 was 1,876, up 13.4% from 2006. 16.8% of the population is 19 or under, 47.2% is aged 20-39 and 36% is 40 or older. In total there are 1033 private dwellings in the community, with 765 occupied by usual residents.

HEALTH
Tofino has a medical clinic, hospital, public heath nurse, two pharmacists, dentist, optometrist, chiropractor, physio therapists and a variety of massage therapists and acupuncturists.

SAFETY
Tofino has an RCMP detachment, Coast Guard station, volunteer fire department and Search and Rescue Society. The District of Tofino offers public education, emergency planning and response programs to prepare for and respond to minor emergencies and major events. For more information, please visit the District of Tofino's website at www.tofino.ca/content/emergency-preparedness

EDUCATION
Tofino has one public daycare facility, the Children's Community Centre, for children aged 30 months and older. In addition, for children 1 to 12 years old, Tofino currently has three private options.

The Wickaninnish Community School  offers education from kindergarten to grade 7 and is centrally located in Tofino. Grades 8-12 are only offered at  Ucluelet Secondary School, approximately an hour bus ride from Tofino.

COSTS OF LIVING IN TOFINO
In Tofino we pay for garbage and recycling collection, sewage disposal and water consumption. Garbage and recycling costs roughly $150/year and is billed by the Alberi-Clayoquot Regional District in Port Alberni. In Tofino, the majority of homes are connected to municipal sewer and water. These services are metered and charged based on a consumption basis. From April 1 to October 1 water consumption rates double and water conservation efforts are encouraged by the District.

Each year the District of Tofino calculates the budget it needs to provide services to the community. This budget, along with the assessed value of your property, is how property taxes are calculated. Property taxes are calculated for the whole year, due on July 2 and are payable by cheque or cash only. If you are late in paying your taxes, penalties will apply. If your home in Tofino is your principal residence and you are under 65 years of age, you will be eligible for a homeowner's grant that will reduce your property taxes by $350-$770 (depending on the amount of your taxes). If you are over the age of 65 you may be eligible for an addition grant of up to $275. However, if your home is assessed at $1,100,000 or more, the homeowners grant is reduced on a graduated scale.
